Overview

What Is VAT in the UAE?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a 5% consumption tax levied on the supply of goods and services at each stage of the supply chain. The UAE introduced VAT on 1 January 2018 under Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017. It is administered by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) and applies to most goods and services supplied in the country.

Businesses registered for VAT must charge 5% on their standard-rated supplies, file regular VAT returns via the EmaraTax portal, and remit the net VAT owed to the FTA. Failure to register on time, file accurately, or pay on time can result in significant FTA penalties.

Who Needs to Register for VAT?

UAE VAT law sets two registration thresholds based on your annual taxable turnover:

Mandatory Registration AED 375,000+

If your taxable turnover in the previous 12 months exceeded AED 375,000 β€” or you expect it to exceed this within the next 30 days β€” VAT registration is compulsory. You must register before trading at or above this level.

Voluntary Registration AED 187,500+

If your taxable turnover exceeds AED 187,500 but is below AED 375,000, you may choose to register voluntarily. This can benefit your business if your customers are VAT-registered and want to reclaim input VAT.

Late Registration Penalty: The FTA imposes a penalty of AED 10,000 for failure to register on time. If you have exceeded the threshold and have not yet registered, contact us immediately. We can submit your application the same day.
Why Register

Benefits of VAT Registration in the UAE

Legal Compliance

Avoid the AED 10,000 late registration penalty and all subsequent VAT fines. Registration keeps your business fully compliant with UAE tax law from day one.

Reclaim Input VAT

VAT-registered businesses can reclaim the VAT paid on eligible purchases and expenses, directly improving your cash flow and reducing operating costs.

Business Credibility

A VAT TRN signals to customers, suppliers, and banks that your business is compliant and professionally run β€” particularly important for B2B contracts and trade.

International Trade

VAT registration is often required for cross-border transactions, export documentation, and international contracts. It enables your business to operate more competitively in the global market.
